Product spotlight: Xovis 3D people counters
The next generation of people counters is now available for installation with AdvaNova. Xovis 3D people counters, an anonymous, discreet occupancy management device, aid decision-makers in library and visitor attraction settings.
Compatible with AdvaNova’s Sentry access control applications or our FE Technologies products, the Xovis range promotes efficiency and safety. The counters can be installed in ceilings for minimal disruption, monitoring visitor flows without compromising privacy.
What are Xovis 3D people counters?
The latest iterations of Xovis 3D people counters offer 99% accuracy when tracking occupancy numbers. Their subtle design, akin to a smoke detector, can be installed in ceilings at one or more locations throughout a building. Once users cross the threshold, which extends up to 100m, their entries and exits are logged in real time.
This data feeds into a management console. The sensors will scan entrances and exits, as well as throughout buildings to monitor zoning occupancy. Decision-makers can study visitor movement in real time, and analyse historical trends. Key metrics include:
- Overall traffic counting
- Zone occupancy/heatmaps
- Dwell/waiting times.
People counters are ideal in libraries, large-scale retail and visitor attractions. They offer unique insights for both in and outdoor locations.
How the Xovis 3D people counters work
An upgrade to previous heatmap technology, the newest models use 3D optical sensors. This ensures complete user anonymity without accuracy concerns. Using artificial intelligence, the counters can also discern objects such as wheelchairs or prams.
The counters’ built-in dust and water protection makes them safe for use in all environments, with installation heights from 1.95m to 20m. They are also resistant to shadow and heat emissions, and require minimal light to work. While most retail and office settings operate at 500 lux, the Xovis requires just 2 lux.
Benefits of using people counters
People counters are flexible, cost-effective devices for locations with high footfall. They can be used standalone or in tandem with access control devices, for example, to monitor individual zones. This is ideal for building managers who need to:
- Organise staff – rotas can be based upon peak visitor hours
- Save on utilities costs – studying which zones need heating/lighting at which times
- Analyse trends – using real-time and historical data for event planning
- Build a business case – showing investors concrete figures for visitor numbers during funding applications.
Security and privacy
In light of recent technological developments and legislation, people counters can also assist with compliance. A 2023 study by KMPG revealed that 68% of consumers are concerned about business data collection.
The Xovis 3D people counters do not use cameras or any other facial recognition technology, and every log is anonymous. Information gathered is for multiple visitors rather than individuals. For privacy, it is automatically deleted after three years. The user interface features up to four privacy levels, with password protection and SSL certificate add-ons available.
Building safety is a key concern for managers, particularly with the introduction of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, otherwise known as Martyn’s law. To comply with maximum building occupancy numbers, the software will trigger an alert if visitors are approaching these limits.
