As we cross over into 2022, electric cars continue to steal the headlines. The frenzy for these environmentally friendly alternatives has transcended the UK and made its way into Europe – with Reuters reporting 65 per cent of all Norwegian car sales “going electric”.
Naturally, the Tesla Model 3 continues to dazzle. Its 300+ mile range and slick acceleration make it one of the most in-demand new electric cars for 2022. But while Musk’s brainchild will always have the spotlight, there are a few hot releases for 2022 that will set pulses racing.

Volvo XC90
At last, the Volvo gods have listened to our prayers and delivered on their promise to go fully electric for 2022. In an even bolder move, the 2022 XC90 will only be available in fully electric or hybrid petrol powertrains, signalling Volvo’s seriousness about the environment.
Having ditched the diesel, Volvo will offer motorists a new autonomous driving system. With LiDAR sensors, driving will not only be smooth, but a safe experience. The Concept Recharge system could see a range of up to 310 – so watch this space.
Kia EV6
Taking inspiration from Volvo, Kia too has ambitious plans to go carbon-neutral by 2045. The EV6 will be the first of a range of bespoke models, and offers a family car with a comfortable 300-mile range. As a crossover, it’s a little smaller than the apparent trend for electric SUVs in 2022, but it still packs a punch.
You can choose two or four-wheel drive, while it’s also very easy on the eye. Pick one of three trims, Air, GT-Line and GT-Line S, and have fun with the onboard infotainment.
BMW IX M60
Speaking of larger SUVs, the BMW ix M60 electric SUV made its debut on the main stage at Las Vegas’ Consumer Electronics show this year. As the first ever fully electric BMW M model, it’s more powerful than we’ve seen before, boasting 600 horsepower and beating the iX xDrive50.
It can hit 0-60 in four seconds and will have an enormous 105.2 kWh battery. If that wasn’t enough, BMW have also served up a few gimmicks – including the ability to change its exterior colour.
Toyota bz4X
This really is a year for firsts when it comes to electric cars. The bz4X is yet again the first all-electric in the range, this time for Japanese manufacturer Toyota. Developed in collaboration with Subaru, this SUV will feature four models ranging from basic through to premium. Get an entry-level Pure and you’ll still benefit from a reversing camera and smaller infotainment system. Upgrade to the Premier edition and you’ll get all the bells and whistles, including a panoramic sunroof.
The range stays the same across the board, though – a comfortable 280 miles. The good news is that the bz4X has superfast charging at 150kw. Get to 80 per cent in just half an hour!
Mercedes EQE
Bucking the trend of the electric SUVs, this new UK electric car for 2022 is your classic Mercedes saloon. As a smaller version of the premium EQS, you might think the EQE is lacking in other areas such as range. You’d be wrong. With a 90kWh battery, it offers an astounding 410 miles of range, making it a worthy rival to higher-end Teslas.
It’s aesthetically pleasing on both the inside and outside, with the infotainment system mirroring its luxurious EQS predecessor. The dual Hyperscreen system is a glimpse into the future, and if you fancy the upgrade, you can even get a 17-inch touchscreen for the passenger seat.
