About Katie Lingo
My name is Katie Thompson and I am the face of Katie Lingo. After graduating with a BA in Spanish and Linguistics from the University of York, I began a career in freelance journalism in 2012. Four years later I created Katie Lingo to help people with content creation up and down the country.
*Here I am grinning after Yahoo! won the Best Media Marketing Campaign award – a campaign to which I had contributed editorial and video work!

Where it all began
My passion for storytelling began when I was eight years old, binding blank sheets of paper together to write storybooks for my grandparents. During my studies I was convinced to go into journalism, an idea which was planted by my mother and blossomed after I took a ‘Breaking News’ course with News Associates at university. After graduating, I took my first full time editorial assistant job at a magazine and began freelancing in my spare time.
In 2013 I came across a distance learning course from the National Council for the Training of Journalists. I started on what would become a very laborious but worthwhile endeavour.

Creating Katie Lingo
Over the next three years I taught myself the principles of British journalism with the aid of the NCTJ’s study guides. With exams taking place every six months, I studied Reporting, Media Law, Public Affairs and Teeline Shorthand. I was also working towards a portfolio and took elective modules in Business of Magazines and Production Journalism.
After months of painstaking practice, I completed my final Teeline module in July 2016. By this point I was working in digital marketing and my print media career had quickly transitioned into online content creation. I decided to put my newly-acquired skills to good use and create an all-in-one writing service, helping businesses and students with content marketing and proofreading services.

Then and now
When the first Katie Lingo website was launched, I was mostly targeting students and helping them write their essays or putting together blogs for local businesses. Since then I’ve had the privilege of working with magazines, charities, HR consultants, recruiters, retailers and agencies on a large range of projects.
My vast client base has given me access to industries about which I knew nothing previously, helping to expand my skill set to PR, SEO, Google AdWords, blogging, web design and much more. Katie Lingo has afforded me some wonderful opportunities, including running the 2018 London Marathon. It’s come a long way since the days of writing stories, but there’s still so far to go.
